Statement made by Chief Officer Hans L. Omland
On Monday 8th December, 1941, I, Chief Officer Hans L. Omland, in company with the undermentioned members of the ms. "NYHORN":-
3rd Engineer Karlief Karstensen
O. S. Sigurd Langeland
Cook Magne Thordal
O. S. Ingolf Tvedt
left Port Lyautey French Morocco, in a 17' boat with the intention of escaping and making for Gibraltar.
The same night whilst crossing the bar we shipped water which ruined the electrical battery and we had to continue the voyage without lights.
Nothing of any importance occurred until the evening of the 10th/11th December when we were outside Cape Espartel, there Ingolf Tvedt who was standing up in the boat suddenly fell overboard. I ordered a lifebelt to be thrown in the direction he had fallen and told the others to stop the boat whilst a search was made for him. At this time it was very dark and we circled round shouting his name but received no answer. The current was very strong and was running against us and we could not make much headway. We drifted around until daylight of the 11th inst. and no further trace of this man could be found.
I gave orders to carry on and we arrived at Gibraltar on the morning of the 14th December 1941, and later in the day I saw the Norwegian Consul to whom I reported the loss of this man.
