This privacy policy describes the information we collect for the registration of war sailors, its relation to public inquiries and visitors on our websites, how and why we collect and use the information, how we safeguard our users’ rights, and the rules of privacy law.
Collection, storage, comparing, disclosure and other processing of personal data is regulated in the Personal Data Act.
The law stipulates, i.a., strict requirements for confidentiality and security when processing personal data. The Norwegian Data Protection Authority (DPA) supervises the law.

The director is responsible for the processing of personal data.
When the law refers to “processing responsibility”, this indicates the person who determines the purpose of the personal data processing and which tools can be used.
It is the data processor’s responsibility that the processing of personal data is done in accordance with the law.
What personal data does the Norwegian Centre for the History of Seafarers at War store and how is this personal information used:
We collect personal information in relation to public inquiries to Krigsseilerregisteret.no/Norwegian Centre for the History of Seafarers at War. Information about the public is used in relation to the processing of public inquiries, when exchanging information/documentation, or as the public is recorded in a log (for internal use only) of those who have been in contact, either written or verbally, with the Norwegian Centre for the History of Seafarers at War.
Such information is: first name and last name, e-mail address, residential address, telephone number, and any content in written correspondence. This information is not disclosed with other parties.
The Norwegian Centre for the History of Seafarers at War collaborates with seamen’s associations in Norway and others to systematically register all war sailors from World War 2. As we progress with the documentation, each war sailor gets their own website on Krigsseilerregisteret.no.
Almost all the war sailors have passed away by now, but an unknown number (50-100) are still alive. Information about the war sailors is retrieved from reliable sources (primarily archive material), and it is information such as:
- First name
- Last name
- Date of birth
- Date of death
- Cause of death (this may be regulated if the subject material is confidential)
- Place of birth
- Place of residency
- Parents
- Nationality
- Gender
- Marital status
- Served in WW1
- Served in WW2
- Status as war sailor
- Perished in WW1
- Perished in WW2
- Member of a seamen’s association
- Which district they mustered in
- Relation to county
- Highest rank or position
- Education
- Served in fleet
- Medals received
- Participant in shipwreck
- Mentioned in literature/archive material
Automatic storage of information:
Like most other websites, Krigsseilerregisteret uses cookies. Cookies are small information files that are left on your computer to ensure our visitors experience a user-friendly service. This does not pose a risk to you, but you can an any time refuse to consent to the storage of cookies.
Krigsseilerregisteret.no uses the analytical tool Google Analytics to analyse user behaviour on the website. The program collects information about which pages are the most read, what visitors search for on Krigsseilerregisteret.no, the number of visitors, how long each user session lasts, etc. The information cannot be traced back to you.
With whom do we share the information with?
The Norwegian Centre for the History of Seafarers at War/Krigsseilerregisteret have third-party service providers in charge of the operation and support of IT and web-based services: IT developer Oxidane. Servers are rented at Microsoft Azure.
We enter written agreements with third parties with whom we share information, and we establish clear requirements on how they must comply with the current privacy legislations, including the requirements for information security.
To the extent required by law or judicial decision, or if necessary for the investigation of possible offences against our business, the relevant information may be disclosed to public authorities or others who are entitled to this information.
We work systematically and dedicated to provide information security, and we utilize both technical and organizational security measures to protect personal information against unauthorized access and use.
How long is the personal data stored?
We store the personal information for as long as necessary for the purposes described in the sections above, or to meet certain legal requirements. This means that the storage time for different types of information may vary. Information/documentation about the war sailors in Krigsseilerregisteret is intended to be “permanent”.
