Knut Magne Haugland var telegrafist før krigen, men ble kalt inn i til militærtjeneste. Han tjenestegjorde på Narvikfronten, og ble senere med i motstandsarbeidet. Han var et av medlemmene i gruppen som stod bak tungtvannsaksjonen på Vemork. Etter krigen deltok han i Kon-Tiki-ekspedisjonen i 1947
