Utdannet til inspeksjons- og vepningsoffiser ved Sjøforsvarets Skytteravdeling for Handelsflåten.
Etter endt utdannelse gjorde han tjeneste på:
D/S BERGENSFJORD (troppeskip) som Væpningsoffiser (Løytnant)
Han var ombord i D/S BERGENSFJORD under invasjonen på Sicilia i juli 1943. Under landgangen bet kanonbesetningen på D/S BERGENSFJORD godt fra seg. De sto på i over 40 timer uten søvn, og ble komplimentert for god skyting og utholdenhet av O.C. Troops og flere av R. N. offiserene som jo var ombord inntil fartøyet forlot Sicilia.
