Johannes Moe var ekstramannskap om bord i hvalkokeriet SKYTTEREN (Kvarstadbåt) da den ble angrepet av tyske marinefartøyer. SKYTTEREN ble senket av eget mannskap. Mannskapet ble tatt til fange og satt i tyske konsentrasjonsleir til 26. mai 1945.
