Holst var om bord TIRRANNA da skipet ble beskutt av en tysk hjelpekrysseren 10. juni 1940. Han ble hardt såret. Senere ble TIRRANNA tatt som prise og ført til Frankrike, men ble senket at britisk u-båt, HMS "TUNA". Holst satt som fange i Royan til han ble frigitt og sendt til Norge hvor han ankom Oslo 17.12.1940.
