Forlot Norge før krigen som skipper og telegrafist på selfangeren Quest av Tromsø. Etter krigsutbruddet var han en tid styrmann på selfangeren Sælis av Tromsø som gikk i frakt mellom Sidney, New Zealand og New Foundland. Senere ble han tilkalt av direktør Devold på Nortraships kontor i Halifax for å assistere der. Da S/S Victo manglet kaptein, overtok han denne som fører.
