Antatt i marinen 27.7.1945, og ble utdannet til skytter i Dumbarton, Skottland.
På
grunn av fredsslutningen med Japan høsten 1945, ble det ikke brukt for
skyttere om bord på norske handelsskip bestemt for Østen.
Han gjorde tjeneste i land som dekksmann fra 27.7.1945 til 30.7.1946, og som artillerimatros fra 1.8.1946 til dimitteringen 29.2.1948.
