I første del av krigen (etter Norge ble okkupert) var Larsen påmønstret fartøy som gikk langs norskekysten. Fartøyet hadde norsk mannskap og tyske offiserer. Larsen flyktet deretter sammen med to andre personer i seilfly over til Storbritannia. I perioden 1943-1945 var han i en ukjent periode påmønstret skip i Nortraship, blant annet M/S RENA. Returnerte til Norge i 1945.
