Var på m/s Hermion som under reise fra Durban til Sydney var utsatt for heftig flyangrep, og han ble slengt nedover en trapp av lufttrykket. Senere hadde han stadig smerter i siden. Under en reise mellom Sydney og Melbourne ble han alvorlig syk og ved ankomsten til Melbourne operert for svulst på leveren, men døde 3 dager etter, 29. november 1941.
