Morten Giving løste maskinistsertifikat i Kristiansand 4.januar 1938. I sertifikatet er det notert : Fartstid og verkstedstjeneste godkjent av departementet i skrivelse av 3.januar 1938.
Mønstret 3.maskinist på M/S FERNWOOD i Oslo 15.01.1938, mønstret av 02.07.1938 i Istanbul.
Mønstret 3.maskinist på M/S FERNHILL i Istanbul 14.07.1938, mønstret om til 2.maskinist i Baltimore 20.08.1940, mønstret av i Baltimore 07.10.1942.
Mønstret 2.maskinist på M/S GARONNE i New York 30.11.1942, mønstret av i New York 10.09.1943.
Tok deretter Amerikansk maskinistsertifikat og seilt på M/T GULF OF VENEZUELA og M/T GULF CREST frem til krigsslutt.
Tok maskinsjefeksamen i Kristiansand 1948, og løste maskinsjefsertifikat i Kristiansand 9.juli 1948.
Mønstret maskinsjef på M/T ARENA i Tvedestrand 21.09.1948, mønstret av i Bahrain 14.06.1950.
Begynte deretter som maskinlærer på Risøya Maretimeskole å var der frem til 1978.
