1.styrmann D/S SPES av Kristiansand. Rederiet A/S Songvaar v/ T.Isaksens rederi. påmønstret 20.1.1939. avmøntret 4.10.1945. (D/S SPES var siste skip som forlot Sete, Frankrike i de siste kaotiske dager i juni 1940 da evakueringen holdt på. D/S SPES hadde med 11 flyktninger til England.
D/S SPES deltok i invasjonen i Normandie - operasjon Neptun - ankom 8.juni og var ferdiglosset den 18.juni 1944.)
Påmønstret MAILAND 6.10.1945 for å reise hjem til Norge.
Gunvald Heldal ble tildelt Krigsmedaljen under krigen og Kong Haakon`s Frihetsmedalje.
Gunvald Heldal døde i 1987.
