Her forteller Haugen selv følgende: "I 1939 tok jeg hyre som dekksgutt på M/S Grenanger, som skulle gå i linjefart fra USA vestkyst og rundt Syd-Amerika. I Buenos Aires fikk jeg visum til å oppholde meg hos en onkel i Belem i Brasil, og mønstret av der.
I 1941, 18 år gammel, ble jeg innkalt til tjeneste i handelsflåten eller Den norske Marine. Jeg valgte å ta hyre på S/S Brush til USA og videre til Grønland, Island og England, både i konvoi- og alenefart. Ett år var jeg stasjonert på Travers Island i Sjøforsvarets Skytteravdeling for Handelsflåten.
19. desember 1945 kom jeg hjem til Norge."
