Allum "var styrmann i handelsflåten og hvalfanger på Grytviken landstasjon. Der var han også bestyrer et par sesonger under overvintring. Han seilte ute under hele krigen, men kom velberget hjem i 1945/46 etter 5-6 år. På sine gamle dager var han i mange år guide på Hvalfangstmuseet i Sandefjord".
