Sjømann, fartstid ca.276 måneder.Før krigen var han bl.a. ombord i :
M/S TENERIFFA av Tønsberg, ERNEST CASSEL, HALFRIED, FJORDHEIM og D/S PROFIT som ble minesprengt i Thames den 17.april 1941. 12 mann omkom og Olafsen var blant de 5 mann som ble reddet.
Han meldte seg til marinen og ble utdannet til skytter i Dumbarton, Skottland.
Senere seilte han ut som skytter med:
D/T NORHOLM fra 13.4.1942 til 22.7.1942.
M/T B.P. NEWTON fra 31.7.1942 til 24.12.1942.
D/S TAI SHAN fra 28.12.1942 til 7.4.1943.

M/S ALF LINDBERG fra 19.10.1943 til 20.9.1944.
Landtjeneste i San Francisco fra 21.9.1944 til 13.6.1945.
Skytter hvalkokeriet D/S THORSHAMMER fra 14.6.1945 til dimittering den 1.september 1945.
Tildelt Krigsmedaljen og Haakon VII`s Frihetsmedalje.
