Reiste som førstereisgutt ombord i D/S PENYBRYN som dekksgutt i oktober 1931
tilhørende Lundegaard & Sønner, Farsund og mønstret av i august 1932. Fortsatte sin
sjøtjeneste ombord i D/T RADIX, tilhørende Mosvolds Rederi, Farsund inntil desember 1935.
I perioden 1937 til 1940 tok han Styrmannskolen i Farsund, Radioskole i Kristiansand
og Skipperskolen i Farsund
Reiste i 1938 ut som matros/telegrafist ombord i Cate B, tilhørende Th. Brøvig, Farsund
og ommønstret til kombinert 3.styrmann/ telegrafist i mars 1940 Det var den gang helt
alminnelig at telegrafistens yrke var kombinert med en annen stilling ombord.
