Reidar Otto Poulsen reiste fra Norge til Sverige vinteren 1939. Etter krigsutbruddet tjenestegjorde han som 2.maskinist ombord på M/T RIGMOR, M/S TAURUS og M/S TAI SHAN som lå i internert i Gøteborg. (Kvarstadbåter). Poulsen var påmønstret M/S TAI SHAN som maskinsjef da skipet klarte å flykte fra Sverige 23. januar 1941 sammen med flere andre skip. Ankom Kirkwall, Storbritannia, 25. januar 1941 og gikk inn i Nortraships tjeneste.
Ifølge bror av Poulsen var Reidar Otto Poulsen mottaker av medaljene Krigskorset og Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for sin innsats i maskinen under rømningen med M/S TAI SHAN. Dette bekreftes i andre kilder, se kildefelt.
