Var 1. styrmann på M/T VARANGER av Bergen da skipet ble torpedert 25. januar 1942 underveis til New York fra Curacao med oljelast. Hele besetningen på 38 mann ble reddet.
Krokeide meldte seg til marinen og ble utdannet til inspeksjons- og væpningsoffiser ved Sjøforsvarets Skytteravdeling for Handelsflåten.
Etter endt utdannelse gjorde han tjeneste på:
