Etter å ha oppgitt sjøen i 1920 på grunn av sykdom, tok han iglen hyre som skipsfører i mars 1940 på D/S BOKN, og omkom den 9.juli da skipet ble torpedert i Den engelske kanal. Gravlagt i Portland.
