Etter flere forgjeves forsøk på å komme til England ble han med som 2.styrmann på M/T STORSTEN, som gikk fra Gøteborg den 31.mars 1942 med kurs for England, men ble angrepet 1. april 1942. Mannskap og passasjerer gikk i livbåtene og skipet ble senket av besetningen. Livbåten Tønnesen var i, fortsatte vestover, men mannskapet omkom, og båten drev senere i land ved Tyborøn-kanalen på Vestkysten av Jylland i Danmark.
M/T STORSTEN var en av de såkalte «Kvarstadbåtene» som hadde ligget i arrest i Gøteborg. Den 31. mars 1942 brøt hun ut sammen med 10 andre norske skip med kurs for England.
