Var med i kampene i Norge i 1940. Da det britisk - norske angrep på Lofotøyene i 1941 var avsluttet (Lofotraidet), var han blandt de menn som meldte seg frivillig for å bli med til Storbritannia og gå inn i de norske styrkene i dette landet.
Antatt i marinen og utdannet til skytter i Dumbarton, Scotland.
