"At the time of the invasion the ship [Bera] was near the Norwegian coast bound for BERGEN. They were warned that the Germans were in BERGEN and the vessel hid in a fjord north of BERGEN until it was discovered by a German reconnaissance 'plane. After escaping at night the ship was eventually discovered and taken over by the Germans after the end of the war in South Norway and taken into BERGEN where HAUGLAND left it on 16th May 1940.

On 1st July 1940 he signed on a Fred OLSEN boat named the "BRETOGNE" which was acting as German depot ship at TRONDHEIM. He left it after 2,5 months when it started duty as troop carrier. For a short period in the early autumn of 1940 HAUGLAND worked for the Germans on an aerodrome at HATTFJELLDAL, but remained for only three weeks before giving it up and going home. On 4th November 1940 he signed on the "ROYAL JARL" on which he made one trip to HAMBURG from BERGEN and back, signing off 25th February 1941 and going home again for a period.

[He later] signed on a ship named "LA FRANCE" in TRONDHEIM but when he got aboard he found that the crew were German and were loading mines, so left the ship again the same night.

From then until the end of October HAUGLAND attempted to avoid the regulations prohibiting him as a seaman to work on the land and obtained jobs with SETSAAS of TRONDHEIM and HAMA of TRONDHEIM for short periods. He was apparently tracked down on each occasion by the Labour Bureau and eventually, at the end of October, was compelled to take work on a ship and signed on the "KONG HARALD". He was on board the "KONG HARALD" at the time of the LOFOTEN raid and availed himself of the opportunity afforded to come to England."
